چکیده

The successful implementation of machine learning in autonomous rover traverse science requires addressing challenges that range from the analytical technical realm, to the fuzzy, philosophical domain of entrenched belief systems within scientists and mission managers. These challenges are many. They include helping scientists understand the benefits and risks of using machine learning onboard and guiding them to distill and translate science goals into clear tasks that can be accomplished by algorithms. The technical challenges include, among other things, developing robust verification and validation plans. The ultimate test of onboard machine learning acceptance is if it flies and is executed onboard and delivers successful results during the mission. This last hurdle can be overcome by developing an implementation plan that poses an acceptable risk vs. reward scenario for mission managers. We are working on rover traverse science applications that address each of these issues. In this paper we will describe what we are doing and how we approach these challenges.

A Study on Optimal Design of Image Traverse Networks for Mars Rover Localization

Rover localization accuracy is critical for Mars surface exploration missions. It is especially crucial for future longrange rover missions, such as MER (Mars Exploration Rover) 2003. The geometry of the rover image traverse network is one of the most important factors to achieving high accuracy. A systematic study of geometric image traverse design was carried out. Several traverses of side lo...

Learning and Planning for Mars Rover Science

unknown environments where unexpected conditions can With each new rover mission to Mars, rovers are traveling significantly longer distances. In some cases, distances are increasing by orders of magnitude from previous missions. This increase enables not only the collection of more science data, but causes a large rise in the number of new and different science collection opportunities. In thi...

Extremely Low Levels of Dispersal Observed for Human-associated Microbes into a Local Pristine Terrain during a Simulated Moon Traverse on Sea Ice along the Northwest Passage in the Arctic

Introduction: Future human missions to the Moon and Mars will transport terrestrial microorganisms to the sites of exploration. This will be an unintended experiment in directed panspermia [1]. Although the Moon is considered to be free of conditions that would easily support microbial activity, and is likely sterile, the Moon can be used for testing hardware, operations, and protocols slated f...
